Interview with Casey Benson (Theset)

Who Are You?
My name is Casey. I’m an addict to coffee, baked goods and guitar. I’m in a band called THESET originally from the west coast of Canada, but who now call Toronto home.

Why do you play music?
Growing up, I had uncles who played guitar and exposed me to a ton of music. I recall getting Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness as a present when it was released in ’95. I was nine, and understandably overwhelmed by the gift. Many years later I came to love it, and To Forgive will always tweak my insides. That kind of feeling is why I do music.

Music is a challenge. It is the foundation of my closest friendships. Music lets me be social and creative at the same time. It’s so easy to sit back and absorb, but I’d rather make something.

What has been on your mind lately?
I have a full chicken in my fridge that I need to cook. Like, today. How should I season it? How long to cook it for? Will I need gravy? Should I invite friends over to feast? (Nah)

What’s happening with your band lately?
We’ve been writing and demoing in the beat-lab. When you put 5 musically schizophrenic people in a studio, things can get out of hand. It’s taken some time, but we’ve finally got a grasp on what kind of album beast we’re birthing. We’ll be testing out a few new tracks at the Mod Club in Toronto Feb 18, 2012.

Any bands you can recommend to us?
Rock- Bruce Peninsula, Open Flames
Metal- The Human Abstract, Digital Veil
Punk- Propagandhi
RnB- The Weeknd, Echoes of Silence
Pop- The Antlers, Burst Apart
Folk- Deep Dark Woods, Winter Hours
Electronic- Black Moth Super Rainbow, Eating Us

Best concert you have ever been too?
When I first joined THESET, I recall dipping in and out of sleep side-stage listening to Alexisonfire and Public Enemy at Wakestock. I was so exhausted, but so happy.

What are you most excited for in 2012?
Releasing this album and touring. The west coast is calling my name.
