Dean Richards

Why do you play music?
Because I like sharing stories with people.

What has been on your mind lately?
How good the band The National is.

Nothing much. We’re playing a show in Toronto in April but it’s not announced yet. My other band, The Victim Party, is playing our LP release show on March 2nd in Toronto.

Any bands you can recommend to us?
Live The Story - a great band from Toronto.
Adele - no one’s heard of her…

Propaghandi and Strike Anywhere at the Phoenix in Toronto in June of 2009.

What are you most excited for in 2012?
Writing more tunes!

Interview with Casey Benson (Theset)

Who Are You?
My name is Casey. I’m an addict to coffee, baked goods and guitar. I’m in a band called THESET originally from the west coast of Canada, but who now call Toronto home.

Why do you play music?
Growing up, I had uncles who played guitar and exposed me to a ton of music. I recall getting Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness as a present when it was released in ’95. I was nine, and understandably overwhelmed by the gift. Many years later I came to love it, and To Forgive will always tweak my insides. That kind of feeling is why I do music.

Music is a challenge. It is the foundation of my closest friendships. Music lets me be social and creative at the same time. It’s so easy to sit back and absorb, but I’d rather make something.

What has been on your mind lately?
I have a full chicken in my fridge that I need to cook. Like, today. How should I season it? How long to cook it for? Will I need gravy? Should I invite friends over to feast? (Nah)

What’s happening with your band lately?
We’ve been writing and demoing in the beat-lab. When you put 5 musically schizophrenic people in a studio, things can get out of hand. It’s taken some time, but we’ve finally got a grasp on what kind of album beast we’re birthing. We’ll be testing out a few new tracks at the Mod Club in Toronto Feb 18, 2012.

Any bands you can recommend to us?
Rock- Bruce Peninsula, Open Flames
Metal- The Human Abstract, Digital Veil
Punk- Propagandhi
RnB- The Weeknd, Echoes of Silence
Pop- The Antlers, Burst Apart
Folk- Deep Dark Woods, Winter Hours
Electronic- Black Moth Super Rainbow, Eating Us
Guitar- Guthrie Govan, Erotic Cakes

Best concert you have ever been too?
When I first joined THESET, I recall dipping in and out of sleep side-stage listening to Alexisonfire and Public Enemy at Wakestock. I was so exhausted, but so happy.

What are you most excited for in 2012?
Releasing this album and touring. The west coast is calling my name.

Interview with Colin Jacques (The Heights)

Who Are You?
Colin Jacques – I play Bass and sing and junk in The Heights (Finger-gunz)

Why do you play music?
One of the greatest feelings I know is getting up on stage every night with my best friends (regardless of the day we’ve had, any fights, lack of food and sleep…) and playing my heart out for anyone and everyone that is in the place. It is this weird place of mind in our music that can be personal to everyone who is listening, and even to us playing it! Simply put, I play music because there is nothing in the world I love more than music. Touring, writing, recording, its what I love to do more than anything else.

What has been on your mind lately?
We have taken the longest break from shows that we have ever had as a band to write and record the new record. So I guess what is on my mind is shows! I just want to get back out on the road again as soon as possible! Aside from the band, we are all attending University/College, and for me especially, school is always that knaggy mom in the back of your mind.

What’s happening with your band lately?
We are currently in the middle of recording our second record. The process has been amazing! Over the holidays we headed back to Newcomb Studios (https://www.facebook.com/newcombstudios) to work with Adam Newcomb once again. The experience has been nothing but fun for all of us and we are incredibly excited for the new record!

Any bands you can recommend to us?
I like to pride myself as a huge supporter of Independant Canadian music! I can never get enough! Like Pacific is an awesome Pop-Punk band from Toronto (https://www.facebook.com/likepacific) They put out a free EP a while back and have some new tunes coming soon! To Tell The Tale and The Heights go way back, and I have always loved those boys. Really cool Pop-Punk hailing from the GTA (https://www.facebook.com/totellthetale) they also have a free EP and new awesome tunes coming out very soon! And it would be right NOT to mention Lifestory: Monologue. In my opinion, the most unique and interesting band coming out of Canada! I actually have a full chest piece with their lyrics haha. (https://www.facebook.com/lifestorymonologue) Amazing bands, amazing music. Gotta love your independent music

Best concert you have ever been too?
Always a tough question to answer! I would have to say either Every Time I Die or Mayday Parade. Very different bands I know! ETID just has an amazing live show! They just make it incredibly fun to be in the crowd! And Mayday Parade are my guilty pleasure, something about that band gets me every time!

What are you most excited for in 2012?
I am excited to release the new record and tour to the BONE! Going to reach further than ever before! We have some really cool stuff coming out along with the record so you all should make sure to stay in touch!

Interview with Chris Taylor (Abandon All Ships)

Who Are You?
Chris Taylor, drums for Abandon All Ships and Kingdoms.

Why do you play music?
It’s pretty simple really- I just love doing it. It’s cathartic, it makes me feel alive. Sitting at the drums is one place I feel completely confident and in my element. And there’s something indescribable about being at the center of a song with everything happening around you. I live to play, it’s where I feel most like myself.

What has been on your mind lately?
Oh, plenty as usual. I’m trying to spend less time online these days, that’s an ongoing struggle to be honest, haha. Digging into my reading list, and I’ve restarted teaching drum lessons. And I’m one of the few people that still takes resolutions (new years’ or otherwise) seriously, so I’ve gotten back into a fitness and healthy-eating routine, which is holding strong. Other than waiting for winter to be over with, I’m doing pretty well.

What’s happening with your band lately?
AAS has been hard at work in the studio working on the second full-length. So far we’re on schedule, and it should be coming out late spring/early summer. Kingdoms is resurrected on a part-time basis, and we’re playing the odd show every few months, and working on getting some demos finished to put together another EP.

Any bands you can recommend to us?
I will always rep my hometown boys in Lifestory Monologue, they sound nothing like any of the bands I’ve been in and they’re fantastic. Their new record ‘Drag Your White Fur - Make It Grey’ just came out and you can stream/download it at http://lifestorymonologue.bandcamp.com/. Check out the tracks The Sound That Love Makes, Lessons, and Teratoma first.
Also, my bud Aaron Marshall has recently turned his solo project Intervals into a full band and put their first EP up for free/PWYC, that’s at http://intervalsmusic.bandcamp.com/. The song Sonar always gets stuck in my head, give it a spin.

Best concert you have ever been to?
That’s an incredibly hard question, don’t think I could pick just one. Thrice at The Docks in Toronto (now Sound Academy) is definitely up there but it was years ago, I need to catch them again on their final tour this spring. I saw Misery Signals at the Mod Club in early ‘09 and remember being blown away, even after having toured with them previously. As for shows I’ve played, Kingdoms opening for Bring Me The Horizon and ETID fall ‘09 was an amazing experience, probably only topped by getting to play 3 weeks on Warped last summer, which was huge for me and a ton of fun.

What are you most excited for in 2012?
Getting back on the road in the US starting in March, getting new AAS and KD material released and playing it live, and touring Canada again for the first time in 2 years… I haven’t played a single show in British Columbia ever so that would be awesome if we get out that far.
